So yeah, anyone who’s ever had rental property or rehabbed a house has probably had to try and tackle this one. And depending on who you ask, answers might range from stinky bombs to overweight exterminators to black magic and voodoo.
So the other day I was catching up with a pal over coffee (we don’t say “pal” often enough anymore, do we?) and he shared with me this little roach murdering gem I’d honestly never heard of before.
Now this guy’s been managing somewhere north of 50 units for the last 7 years or so, so he’s been around the block a few times and as you might imagine has waged roach war a number of ways over the years. And he promises this tactic is not only cheaper, but beats the pants off any other roach murdering tactic he’s ever employed, including exterminators.
So yeah, public nuisance that I am, I proceeded to whip out Ye Olde Flip Video and captured it for you in about 3:17 minutes of banter.
Word of Caution: The yucky pictures in the middle are his actual results a couple days after we filmed this…bleh!
Enjoy…
Here’s the actual roach killer Chris is recommending in this video tip: Tomcat Roach Glue Traps (The big difference is they have bait in them that really attracts the roaches.)
Please drop him a note here in the blog comments and tell him what you think about this tip…and if you have any thoughts/counter-thoughts about it. I’ll make him come read them. 🙂
Quick note
The tenant did add a bit of peanut butter to the traps which may have helped really attract the roaches. So let’s recap:
Glue Traps + Peanut Butter = Victory
WOW, May have to try this one!!

Thanks for the great tip! My sister-in-law told me another one that she has used for years and when tested, it works, too!
Get a tall mason jar and put some coffee grounds in the bottom (1/2 Cup maybe?) and set it in their traffic zone. The roaches go in and can’t get out! When you get too many in the jar, just screw the lid on and throw it away. (Disgusting critters… Yuck!)
jp … I’m glad to hear that you’re down with Starbucks. I had my grande iced coffee a couple hours ago … was delicious.
A good friend of mine just moved into a new place that seems to have a bit of a roach problem. Thanks for the timely advice 🙂

First…I love the intro/outro graphic and music! Very nice.
Now, thanks for the timely post as I just had an eviction yesterday. The tenant was gone and the place was TRASHED. Filth and millions of roaches were everywhere, and the crack addicts had already moved in (inner city Baltimore…think of “The Wire”). The clean out guy was even yucked out, and he’s seen it all. After clean out was finished, I lobed in 10 bombs and figured that would be a good start. In a few days I’ll go back in and try the glue box trick AND the coffee grounds trick. Thanks for both. BTW, the crack addicts have moved on to their next den. Like roaches, you just need a bright light to get them to scurry away.
Awesome tip guys! Thanks! Does this work for spiders too?

The video is probably really great… I just can’t get myself to even attempt to watch it. Roaches are in my top 3 gross-out things to want to watch, encounter or having to deal with (aka kill).
Cheers,
Thomas

Very cool and earth friendly! I like the coffee grounds in a jar idea, too. It reminds me of the mouse/rat traps my great aunt had! Trap door over some water in a bucket – they drown! How inhumane! 😉
Thanks for the great tips. Keep ’em coming!

Awesome tip. Now, if the trap would just self-combust once it were full.
